Yograj Singh, former cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, recently reflected on the emotional upheavals that shaped his life. Speaking about the years when his first wife, Shabnam, and their son, Yuvraj, left the family home, he described how that painful moment led him into a second marriage. The turbulence he felt then was a mix of anger, confusion, and a deep urge to overcome the sense of abandonment that had suddenly taken over his world.
In a recent interaction with The Vintage Studio, he recalled cricket briefly returning to the center of his life during this phase, even though his own stint in the sport had long ended. Instead of playing, he focused on nurturing Yuvraj’s cricketing future.
After Yuvraj eventually moved forward with his own career, Yograj shifted his attention to raising his two children from his second marriage, who later relocated to the United States. Film opportunities also came his way, but with time moving steadily forward, he felt himself drifting back emotionally to the very place where his suffering had begun. He questioned the meaning behind his years of effort and wondered why he still stood alone despite everything he had done.
The Shock That Changed Him
As recounted during the discussion with The Vintage Studio, Yograj described the day Yuvraj and his mother walked away as the most devastating moment of his life.
“When things came at a point where Yuvi and his mother left me, it gave me the biggest shock. The woman for whom I dedicated my entire life, all of my youth, they can also leave me and go away? A lot of things got destroyed like this..." he stated.
He said he had dedicated his youth and energy to his family, only to watch the people he cherished the most choose another path. The emotional destruction that followed, he said, left him feeling as though the foundation of his world had crumbled.
He explained that he often turned to God, asking why such pain had been placed in his path when he believed he had acted with sincerity toward everyone. While he acknowledged that he may have made mistakes, he insisted he had never intended harm. He said that he wept before the divine and felt as though faith eventually lifted him out of a suffocating emotional sea.
A Quiet Life in the Present
During the same conversation, the former fast bowler described his present life away from his family. He shared that many of his evenings unfold in complete silence, with an empty home and no relatives around him. He depends on the kindness of acquaintances for meals, even though he avoids burdening anyone. Household workers he once hired eventually moved on, leaving him alone once again.
"I rely on strangers for food, sometimes one person, sometimes the other. I don’t bother anyone though.." he said.
Even with all the distance, he expressed deep affection for his mother, his children, his daughter-in-law, and his grandchildren. He said he expects nothing from them and feels that his life journey has reached its natural shape. He said he remains grateful to the divine for every blessing and believes that whenever his time comes, he will be prepared.
"I am ready to die. My life is completed, whenever God wants, he can take me with him..." he said.
Who Is Yograj Singh?
Yograj Singh is a former Indian right-arm fast-medium bowler who represented India in one Test match and six One Day Internationals. His only Test appearance took place in Wellington against New Zealand. After an injury brought his cricketing career to an end, he transitioned into Punjabi and Hindi films. He hails from Kanech village near Doraha in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, and his son Yuvraj Singh represented India from 2000 to 2017.
